    The Australian-Maltese community holds its annual service of remembrance in April each year. This time marks the award of the George Cross to the island by King George VI of the United Kingdom in a letter dated 15 April 1942 so as to "bear witness to the heroism and devotion of its people" during the tremendous hardships they suffered in the early days of World War II.

    This service is held on the first Sunday after the 20th of May. The day includes a small parade, church service, and wreath laying ceremony in remembrance of the men and women from Australia and Greece that fought and fell in the battle of Crete in May 1941. We pay our respect to those people.

    A joint effort by the Shrine of Remembrance and the Chelsea RSL Sub-Branch 'Digger for a Day' gives students in the Chelsea area the chance to make a special pilgrimage to the Shrine close to ANZAC Day each year. Special educational activities are organised for attending school groups who also attend a short service of remembrance during the day.

    This service is held to remember Unit Associations from World War 1 and now also World War 2 who would have attended their annual Pilgrimages during April, but because of the passage of time are longer able to. In WWI, 89,000 Victorians served overseas and 19,000 made the supreme sacrifice.

    The 2/14th Battalion was raised in Victoria in April 1940 and was initially stationed at Puckapunyal until it was sent to the Middle East. In early 1942, they were shipped backed to Australia, disembarking in Adelaide where they camped at Springbank in the Adelaide Hills. They travelled to Melbourne by train and took some well earned leave. As the Japanese threat developed, they moved from the Watsonia camp in Melbourne by train to Glen Innes for a short period before moving on to Yandina in Queensland. The Battalion embarked at Brisbane for the Papuan campaign. Between 16 August 1942 and 15 January 1943 the battalion fought on the Kokoda Track and at Gona.

    Legacy is a national voluntary organisation of veterans, servicemen and women and other volunteers who are dedicated to the care of the dependants of Australian Defence Force members, after the death of a spouse or parent during service, and to Australian and Allied families after operation service. Legacy was formed in 1923.

    Villers Bretonneux Day, April 24th, marks the successful counterattack and recapture of Villers Bretonneux in 1918. This action played a significant role in the overeall defeat of the German attack launched in March 1918.

    A service is held annually by the Friends of the 15th Brigade on April 24th each year at the Shrine of Remembrance. The 15th Brigade, which had suffered dreadfully in the ANZACs first major action on the Western Front at Fromelles, together with the 13th Brigade, was instrumental in this action.

    Villers-Bretonneux is today the main Australian site of commemoration in France.

    Attend the ANZAC Day dawn service to commemorate the service and sacrifice of all Australian service men and women. On this day, we honour and reflect on the impact of war, conflict and peacekeeping operations in Australia’s history.

    Dawn Service commences on the Shrine Forecourt at 6am (assemble from 4.30am). The Official Wreath Laying Service commences at 8.15am (assemble at 7.45am). The ANZAC Day March along St Kilda Road starts at approximately 9am and concludes at the Shrine by 1pm for the Commemorative Service.

    In the month of April we commemorate the following events:

    • 29 April 1915 – Sinking of the AE2
    The Australian submarine AE2 was the first submarine to penetrate the Dardanelles. After five days scouting and harassing Turkish forces the AE2 was attacked by Turkish gunboats, following a brief fight the AE2 scuttled to prevent her capture.

    • 9 April 1942 – Sinking of HMAS Vampire
    Having survived Japanese attacks on ‘Z Force’ - which saw the pride of the Royal Navy HMS Prince of Wales sunk - HMAS Vampire’s luck ran out in April 1942 when she was sunk along with the British aircraft carrier HMS Hermes of the coast of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) by Japanese aircraft.

    • 23 April 1951 – Battle of Kapyong
    The best known Australian action of the Korean War the Battle of Kapyong saw 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment blunt the communist advance on Seoul. More than 17,000 Australians in the Army, Navy and Air Force would serve with the United Nations forces defending South Korea, 340 would lose their lives and thousands more would serve in peacekeeping forces as late as 1957.
