The British Commonwealth Far East Strategic Reserve (commonly referred to as the Far East Strategic Reserve or the FESR) was a military force created from units of the British, Australian, and New Zealand armed forces. Created in the 1950s and based in Malaya, the FESR was conceived as a forward defence point for Australia and New Zealand, providing stability against communist regimes growing in the Southeast Asia region. The FESR Navy Association aims to promote recognition of the service of the men of the FESR's RAN component. As part of their program they hold an annual pilgrimage to the Shrine of Remembrance to lay a wreath at their memorial tree.

Early in 1942, Air Board realised the urgent need for 'an organisation capable of producing airfields in forward areas at short notice while under threat of air attack'. No 5 Airfield Construction Squadron's family tree can be traced back to a detachment of No 1 Mobile Works Squadron which was formed in July 1942 to construct an airfield at Wards Field five miles from Port Moresby. The detachment was named No 1 Mobile Works Squadron (Special Works Force) and it completed its task in the face of extraordinary difficulties. In November 1942, the detachment became No 5 Mobile Works Squadron and on 15th July 1944, was renamed No 5 Airfield Construction Squadron. This title the Squadron has borne proudly ever since. As No 5ACS, the Squadron became part of No 62 Airfield Construction Wing. With a strength of 800 men.

This remembrance service is in memory of the Victorian servicemen and women who served overseas in World War I, either in units of the Australian Military Forces or in ships of the Royal Australian Navy. Their names are recorded forever in the books displayed in the ambulatory of the Shrine of Remembrance. They served in the Middle East, on the Gallipoli Peninsula, in France and on the oceans of the world. 89,000 Victorians served overseas. 19,000 made the supreme sacrifice. We also remember all the men and women who were in uniform before 1939. These brave men and women have become part of our history and are known as the 39ers.
