Operation Pedestal was a Second World War British operation to carry supplies to the island of Malta via naval convoy (3-15 August 1942). This island fortress was a major base for British attacks against German and Italian forces in North Africa, resulting in an Axis siege from 1940 to 1942. Despite being a tactical defeat for the Allies due to major losses, the critical resupply of aviation fuel made the Operation an overall strategic victory, by allowing Malta to continue the fight.
