The Forecourt – Second World War Memorial

In 1954, after World War 2, a memorial forecourt in the shape of a non-denomination cross of sacrifice was added to the Shrine.

Forecourt

The Forecourt replaced the reflecting pool that was part of the original design. It was dedicated by Queen Elizabeth 2 in 1954 to those who served in the 1939-1945 conflict. The inscription on the steps to the northern Forecourt reads:

LET ALL MEN KNOW THIS IS HOLY GROUND

Central to the Forecourt is a bronze inscription:

WE WILL REMEMBER THEM

Cenotaph

CenotaphThe 12.5 metre pillar in the Forecourt supports statuary representing six men in the battle-dress of the Navy, Army and Air Services, carrying a bier on which lies a dead comrade.

The names of the theatres of war where each of the services fought in World War 2 are inscribed on the pillar.

Eternal Flame

Eternal FlameIn front of the Cenotaph is the Eternal Flame.  The flame was lit by Queen Elizabeth 2 in February 1954.

Flagpoles

Three flagpoles in the Forecourt fly the Australian flag and the State and service flags in rotation.

On special occasions the flags of Australia's allies, or the Unit Colours of service units, are flown.
