Stone of Remembrance
The Stone of Remembrance is a marble stone sunk below the pavement where no hands may touch it and where visitors must bow their heads to read the inscription:
GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN
Ray of Light
A special feature of the Shrine is the Ray of Light. Thanks to the combined skills of the astronomer, the mathematician and the surveyor the Ray of Light falls on 'LOVE' on the Stone of Remembrance at 11am on the 11th of November and will continue to do so for 5,000 years at least. The time and date commemorate Armistice (meaning a stay of armed conflict) which marks the end of hostilities in World War 1.
See also Remembrance Day at the Shrine.
Frieze
Around the Sanctuary walls is a frieze of 12 carved panels depicting the armed services at work and in action during World War 1.
Ambulatory and Books of Remembrance
The Ambulatory is a narrow walkway that surrounds the Sanctuary. It contains 42 bronze caskets containing Books of Remembrance with the names of every Victorian who enlisted for active service in the 1914-1918 war or died in camp prior to embarkation. There is also the King's Book, bearing the message from King George V:
LET THEIR NAMES BE FOR EVER HELD IN PROUD REMEMBRANCE
