75th Anniversary of the Shrine

The Shrine of Remembrance is a special place for many Victorians who over the last 75 years have come to the Shrine to pay their respects to the Australian men and women who have served the nation in time of war and in peacekeeping operations. This year marks the 75th Anniversary of the Dedication of the Shrine. It was dedicated on 11 November 1934 by His Royal Highness, Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester in the presence of 300,000 people.

It is important to keep the Shrine's living memory alive. Over 500,000 visitors come to the Shrine each year with thousands of school children coming to the Shrine to learn about the ANZAC Spirit. This year's anniversary allows for the people of Victoria to remember the significance of the Shrine as a sacred place for commemoration as well as education.

The Shrine Trustees are proud to present a program of special events to mark this significant milestone for the Shrine of Remembrance.

A Place To Remember - A History of the Shrine of Remembrance

Bruce Scates

Monash University

Published by Cambridge University Press this book has been commissioned by the Shrine Trustees to tell the story of the Shrine.

"The Shrine of Remembrance is Melbourne’s most imposing monument, and one of the most extraordinary war memorials anywhere. In this well-researched, perceptive, and passionately engaged book, Bruce Scates looks behind the Corinthian columns of a familiar landmark to reveal the tangled emotions – pride, gratitude, comradeship and ambition, as well as grief and loss – that shaped Victoria’s tribute to the dead of the Great War. The Shrine, he shows, has not only been a place to remember, but its history mirrors our changing ways of mourning and remembering. At a time when the story of the Anzacs again resonates strongly with the Australian public, "A Place to Remember" inspires us to ponder anew the complex relationship between history – what they did – and memory – how we remember them." Graeme Davison, Sir John Monash Distinguished Professor, Monash University.

Available through the Shrine of Remembrance Retail Shop, Cambridge University Press and in all good book shops.
