THIS REMEMBRANCE SERVICE IS IN MEMORY OF THE VICTORIAN SERVICEMEN AND WOMEN WHO SERVED OVERSEAS IN WORLD WAR 1, EITHER IN UNITS OF THE AUSTRALIAN MILITARY FORCES OR IN SHIPS OF THE ROYAL AUSTRALIAN NAVY. THEIR NAMES ARE RECORDED FOR EVER IN THE BOOKS OF REMEMBRANCE DISPLAYED IN THE AMBULATORY OF THE SHRINE OF REMEMBRANCE. THEY SERVED IN THE MIDDLE EAST, ON THE GALLIPOLI PENINSULA, IN FRANCE AND ON THE OCEANS OF THE WORLD. 89,000 VICTORIANS SERVED OVERSEAS. 19,000 MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE. In the Navy
The light cruiser HMAS MELBOURNE, which served throughout WW1 in European waters, including the North Sea with the Grand Fleet.
The patrol boat, HMAS COOGEE, a former ferry, which served in WW1 in Australian Waters.
In the Army
HEADQUARTERS 4TH FIELD ARTILLERY BRIGADE - comprising the 10th, 11th and 12th Batteries. Served on the Western Front for over 2 years in support of Australian Infantry Divisions.
NO. 1 FLYING SQUADRON. Served in Egypt from 1916.
NOs. 2 and 4 FLYING SQUADRONS and the 2nd and 3rd PIONEER BATTALIONS. All served on the Western Front from 1916.
AEROPLANE SQUADRON. Supported British expedition in September 1915.
