Presenter: Dr Rosalie Triolo, Faculty of Education, Monash University
The many images of children knitting socks early in the First World War (1914-18) have created an impression that school communities did little else. This presentation discusses traditional crafts, as well as activities that were the result of children’s and teachers’ initiative, but deals mainly with activities no longer practised by schools, such as collecting and posting leeches to hospitals and cooking apples in 15 different ways.
