The 2/29th Australian Infantry Battalion was raised in Victoria in 1940 for service in the Second World War. They took part in the Malayan Campaign and fought delaying actions around Bakri and Muar before withdrawing to Singapore in early 1942. The battalion was captured when the garrison fell, and they spent the rest of the war as prisoners.

This service takes place on the closest Sunday to 17 January – the anniversary of their first action at Bakri in Malaya. 582 members of the 2/29 Battalion were killed in action or died as prisoners, and 143 were wounded in action.
