The American Ex-Servicemen's Association was founded in March 1946 by a group of American service personnel who emigrated to Australia. It is a social organisation formed to promote the welfare of American Ex-Servicemen and women in Australia and to secure better relations between Americans and the Australian community. We honour that relationship today with their annual commemorative service in the Sanctuary.

On 7 December 1941, Imperial Japan entered the Second World War by attacking the allied forces in the Pacific. The most infamous and deadly was a powerful air strike on the United State's Pacific Fleet, anchored in Hawaii's Pearl Harbour, with the aim of destroying the Fleet and thus America's ability to influence the War in the Pacific region. Other simultaneous attacks were meant to serve as preludes to full-scale invasion and occupation of Malaya, Thailand, Guam, Wake, Hong Kong, Singapore, the Philippines and Hawaii.

AMCs were merchant ships converted for naval service with the addition of armour and guns, for self-defence in supply convoys. With limited success in this role some were repurposed as Landing Ships to serve in troop transport roles. HMAS Assault was a Navy training centre specialising in amphibious assaults, characteristic of the Allied offensives in the Pacific theatre of the Second World War.

The Shrine Monthly Remembrance Service honours Victorian servicemen and women from all branches of the Armed Forces. In particular, we remember Victorians who served during the First and Second World Wars, who once would have attended their annual pilgrimage in this month, but due to the passage of time are no longer able to.

In the First World War 89,000 Victorians served overseas. 19,000 made the supreme sacrifice.
In the Second World War 297,000 Victorians served overseas. 10,900 made the supreme sacrifice.

    We will remember them.
