The story of the 2/4 Australian General Hospital during the Second World War is one of which all Australians can be proud. While statistics do not convey the quality of the medical care involved, the fact that some 14,000 casualties passed through the hospital at Tobruk, 19,000 at Redbank and a further 10,000 at Jerusalem, Colomobo and Labuan gioves some idea of the immensity of their contribution. The record of servce rendered by 2/4 AGH i many battlefields between 1940 and 1945 has seldom been surpassed.

In the month of April we commemorate the following events:

    29 April 1915: Sinking of the AE2

9 April 1942: Sinking of HMAS Vampire
Having survived Japanese attacks on 'Z Force' - which saw the pride of the Royal Navy, HMS Prince of Wales, sunk - HMAS Vampire's luck ran out in April 1942 when she was sunk along with the British aircraft carrier HMS Hermes off the coast of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) by Japanese aircraft.

23 April 1951: Battle of Kapyong
The best known Australian action of the Korean War, the Battle of Kapyong saw the 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment blunt the communist advance on Seoul. More than 17,000 Australians in the Army, Navy and Air Force would serve with the United Nations forces defending South Korea. 340 would lose their lives, and thousands more would serve in peacekeeping forces as last as 1957.

In particular, we remember Victorians who served during the First and Second World Wars, who once would have attended their annual Pilgrimage in this month, but due to the passage of time are no longer able to.

In World War I, 89,000 Victorians served overseas. 19,000 made the supreme sacrifice.
In World War II, 297,000 Victorians served overseas. 10,900 made the supreme sacrifice.

In early 1942, they were shipped back to Australia, disembarking in Adelaide where they camped at Springbark in the Adelaide Hills. They travelled to Melbourne by train and took some well earned leave. As the Japanese threat developed, they moved by train from the Watsonia camp in Melbourne to Glen Innes for a short period, before moving on to Yandina in Queensland. The Battalion embarked at Brisbane for the Papuan campaign, and between 16 August 1942 and 15 January 1943 fought on the Kokoda Track and at Gona.
