Held annually, this service commemorates the Allied landings in Normandy, France, on 6 June 1944, better known as 'D-Day'. The largest amphibious landing in history, almost 200,000 men were involved in the invasion on the first day alone, and it is now considered to mark the true beginning of the liberation of Europe. The service also pays respect to those men who would fight in Normandy over the coming weeks as the Allies fought to break out of the beach head and push the Germans back.

The Normandy Veterans Association will be supported by students and staff of Glen Waverley Seconday College, as participants in the Shrine's Adopt an Ex-Service Organisation program. This partnership fosters relationships and enables schools to carry on the legacy of their chosen Association.

  • Queen's Birthday 21 Gun Salute 2020

    6 June 2020, 12:00pm

A 21 Gun Salute on the Lower Forecourt at 12pm will mark the Official Birthday of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the Head of State. Although her actual birthday is 21 April, the reigning monarch holds an Official Birthday usually in early June to coincide with finer weather in the northern hemisphere that benefits the outdoor ceremonies. In Victoria this is held on the second Monday in June

A 21 Gun Salute is a traditional salute firing blanks from an artillery piece or cannon to acknowledge special Royal occasions within the United Kingdom and Commonwealth.

The Shrine Monthly Remembrance Service honours Victorian servicemen and women from all branches of the Armed Forces. In particular, we remember Victorians who served during the First and Second World Wars, who once would have attended their annual Pilgrimage in this month, but due to the passage of time are no longer able to.

In World War I, 89,000 Victorians served overseas. 19,000 made the supreme sacrifice.
In World War II, 297,000 Victorians served overseas. 10,900 made the supreme sacrifice.

    We will remember them.
