The Battle of Amiens began on 8 August 1918, as the opening phase of the Hundred Days Offensive that ultimately led to the end of the First World War. It was one of the most successful advances made by Allied forces during the war, and would be much lauded as an example of combined arms warfare in a conflict mostly remembered for the stalemate of the trenches.

The Rotary Club of Melbourne 0808 Committee hold an annual Remembrance Service to commemorate the Australian contribution to victory at the Battle of Amiens. They also recognise and honour the contribution of General Sir John Monash GCMG KCB VD, a signficant Charter member and President of the Rotary Club of Melbourne 1922-23.

VP (Victory in the Pacific) Day commemorates Japan's acceptance of the Allied demand for unconditional surrender on 14 August 1945. The following day, 15 August, is usually referred to as VP Day, and in 1945 Australian governments gazetted a public holiday as VP Day, with most newspapers referring to it as such. However, the governments of Britain, the United States and New Zealand preferred Victory over Japan or VJ Day. It is not true, as some have claimed, that the day was originally called VJ Day and then surreptiously changed later.

Operation Pedestal was a Second World War British operation to carry supplies to the island of Malta via naval convoy (3-15 August 1942). This island fortress was a major base for British attacks against German and Italian forces in North Africa, resulting in an Axis siege from 1940 to 1942. Despite being a tactical defeat for the Allies due to major losses, the critical resupply of aviation fuel made the operation an overall strategic victory, by allowing Malta to continue the fight.

In the First World War 89,000 Victorians served overseas. 19,000 made the supreme sacrifice.
In the Second World War 297,000 Victorians served overseas. 10,900 made the supreme sacrifice.

18 August is the Anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan (1966), in which the heavily outnumbered men of D Company, 6 Royal Australian Regiment, fought a fierce battle against North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops in a rubber plantation close to the village of Long Tan. In 1969, veterans of 6RAR installed a memorial cross and held a service at Long Tan to commemorate the battle. Over time this day became synonymous with all those who served and died in Vietnam, and in 1987 Prime Minister Bob Hawke announced that Long Tan Day would be known as Vietnam Veterans Day.
