8 Royal Australian Regiment (8RAR) was formed in July 1966 as part of an expansion of the Australian Army in the mid-1960s due to the perceived threat of Communism in southeast Asia. Between 10 February and 9 March 1970 while conducting a reconnaissance mission (Operation Hammersley) around Long Hai, the Regiment sustained their most fatal casualties of their service in the Vietnam War.
