    • The Shrine is a memorial to honour the service and sacrifice of Victorians and Australians in war, conflict, peacekeeping and peacemaking.
    • At the week’s close we pause to remember those who have served and sacrificed. We remember them today as we have always remembered them—now and forever.
    • The Shrine stands for remembering, today and every day, that service and sacrifice are fundamental and relevant in creating, maintaining and protecting our national values and way of life.
    • Service and sacrifice are ongoing and continuous as is our commemoration of it.
    • Here all service is equal, and all are welcome.
    • By attending you are taking part in commemoration of service and sacrifice and we thank you.

The Regiment's tree was established on the Shrine Reserve during the 'Australia Remembers' Year 1995. They decided on an Annual Pilgrimage at Remembrance time for a Memorial Service. The pilgrimage is in honour of all men who served in the Regiment and to the members who made the supreme sacrifice.

The 4th Australian Field Regiment will be supported by students and staff of Caulfield Grammar, as participants in the Shrine's Adopt an Ex-Service Organisation program. This partnership fosters relationships and enables schools to carry on the legacy of their chosen Association.

Raised in Melbourne at the outset of the Second World War, the 2/8th first saw action in North Africa as part of the 6th Division before participating in the disastrous Greece and Crete campaigns. Withdrawn from the Middle East in 1942, the Battalion returned to Australia for jungle warfare training before seeing action against the Japanese in New Guinea in 1944-45.

The Battalion commemorates the service of its members in November each year. The Battalion suffered 94 killed and 272 wounded during the Second World War.

The 2/8th Australian Infantry Battalion Association will be supported by students and staff of Macarthur Street Primary School, as participants in the Shrine's Adopt an Ex-Service Organisation program.
