In the month of December we commemorate the current and ongoing service of Australian Troops on peacekeeping and other operations.

    Evacuation from Gallipoli
In October 1915 the British Government began to consider the need for evacuation. Anzac Cove and Suvla Bay were finally relinquished on 19 December, with Cape Helles following suit on 9 January 1916. The evacuations at Anzac Cove, Suvla Bay and Cape Helles were a triumph of staff planning. By the time of evacuation close to 46,000 allied troops had been killed during the fighting on land from a total of 250,000 casualties. The Turkish forces suffered losses that were possibly even greater.

The Shrine Monthly Remembrance Service honours Victorian servicemen and women from all branches of the Armed Forces. In particular, we remember Victorians who served during the First and Second World Wars, who once would have attended their annual Pilgrimage in this month, but due to the passage of time are no longer able to.

In World War I, 89,000 Victorians served overseas. 19,000 made the supreme sacrifice.
In World War II, 297,000 Victorians served overseas. 10,900 made the supreme sacrifice.

    We will remember them.
