    'Resistance’ and ‘Underground’ are names used to describe the various secret organisations that arose in European states under enemy occupation during the Second World War. Many Australian servicemen and women gave aid to the Resistance, other Australians owed their freedom and lives to it. Discover the stories of some of these individuals who, through accident or design, found themselves battling the enemy using unconventional means.

    The Australian-Maltese community holds an annual service of remembrance to acknowledge the award of the George Cross to the island of Malta by King George VI in a letter dated 15 April 1942. The award was given to "bear witness to the heroism and devotion of its people" during the tremendous hardships suffered in the early days of the Second World War.

    The 2/4 Australian General Hospital were the 4th such unit to be raised for service during the Second World War. Between 1940 and 1945 some 43,000 casualties were treated at Tobruk, Redbank, Jerusalem, Colombo and Labuan where the 2/4th were operating.
