    Dear Laura presents First World War postcards sent to Laura Brooks between 1915 and 1918 by her future husband Alan Ferguson, her brothers Ernest and Arthur and her uncle Charles Newman. These men enlisted and served overseas in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF).

    This exhibition explores the journeys and sights they encountered, the popularity of hand-embroidered silk postcards, the longing for loved ones and thoughts of home, as well as the devastation caused by war.

    The war in the Pacific was essentially a naval struggle. Allied war aims hinged on the destruction of Japan’s powerful navy and the severing of sea communications between Japan and its far-flung Asian and Pacific conquests. Nerves and Steel explores the role played by the RAN in ultimate Allied victory and features items from the Shrine’s own collection as well as loans from the Australian War Memorial, the RAN Heritage Collection, veterans and their families.     Cadets from the Royal Australian Navy Recruit School at HMAS Cerberus attend a Shrine Service as part of their course content. The Recruit School is divided into four intakes per month, in which they complete their 11 week course:
    Emms Division, Rogers Division, Shipp Division and Taylor Division.
    Upon graduation the Recruits are formally recognized as ‘sailors’ in the RAN, promoted to the rank of Seaman (star).

    The Shrine Monthly Remembrance Service honours Victorian servicemen and women from all branches of the Armed Forces. This service focuses on the Victorians who served during the First and Second World Wars.

    In the First World War, 89,000 Victorians served overseas. 19,000 made the supreme sacrifice.
    In the Second World War, 297,000 Victorians served overseas. 10,900 made the supreme sacrifice.

    We will remember them.
