The Merchant Navy refers to a nation’s commercial shipping and crews, making it an essential element of any country’s ability to fight a war. Although not a branch of the Armed Forces, the Merchant Navy is often referred to and recognised as the Fourth Service. The Australian Merchant Navy ran the same wartime risks as the Royal Australian Navy, and suffered higher fatality rates than the fighting services in the Second World War.
