    The Royal Navy and Royal Air Force established bases in the northern-Singapore town of Sembawang that were faught over and destroyed during the British withdrawal in the Battle of Singapore, 1942. The naval base was reocuppied after the Second World War and supported Commonwealth and United States navies and their participation in the major Cold War conflicts of the 1950s and 1960s in the Far East region.
