Outreach and subsidies for equal access to the Shrine

Find out if your school is eligible for funding to support your visit or bring an educator to your classroom.

We want to ensure that all Victorian school students have access to the Shrine.

Outreach

For eligible Victorian schools which are further than a day trip away from Melbourne we can bring a Shrine educator to the classroom.

A Shrine education staff member will visit the school and work with teachers and students to explore and reflect on the human impacts of war. The program uses replica uniforms, equipment and keepsakes from the First World War to invite students to think about how the war affected the lives of Australians 100 years ago and how their own community was affected.

This program is suitable for students from Year 5 to VCE levels. As this is a hands-on and interactive learning experience, groups should be no larger than one class per 60-minute session. For larger schools, we will work with you to plan a series of sessions.

Occasionally the program is run in collaboration with people from the local RSL, or from other community groups, who can provide first-hand accounts of service as well as a link to the community.

Outreach eligibility

  • Rural and regional schools with an ICSEA value of 1000 or less are eligible to apply for Shrine outreach. ICSEA stands for Index of Social and Cultural Advantage. School ICSEA values are determined by ACARA and listed on the MySchool website.
  • Eligible schools may receive either excursion costs reimbursement or a visit from a Shrine outreach educator, but not both within a single calendar year.

Subsidies

We operate a subsidy scheme to reimburse some excursion costs for eligible schools. This applies to single day round trips to the Shrine.

Eligible schools making a day trip class excursion to the Shrine to take part in a guided education program may apply for reimbursement of their bus hire or public transport fares.

Our funding for the scheme has an annual limit and the Shrine reserves the right to allocate funds where they will be of most benefit. Eligibility does not guarantee a successful application for reimbursement, or that we will agree to reimburse the entire cost of your travel. Normally our funding allocation is capped at $35 per group member.

Subsidies eligibility

  • Schools with an ICSEA value of 1000 or less are eligible to apply for the scheme. ICSEA stands for Index of Social and Cultural Advantage. School ICSEA values are determined by ACARA and listed on the MySchool website.
  • A school can only receive one round of reimbursement per year. Schools with year level cohorts spread across more than one campus should call or email for advice before applying.
  • Schools may visit other venues (eg the Melbourne Museum, the MCG) in the same day trip excursion and still receive transport reimbursement from the Shrine. Schools must make their own arrangements and bookings with other venues.
  • Reimbursements are not available for student cohorts who have previously visited the Shrine, i.e. if a school’s Year 5 students visited the Shrine in 2018 we cannot reimburse expenses for the same children to visit the Shrine in 2019 when they are in Year 6.
  • Eligible schools may receive either excursion costs reimbursement or a visit from a Shrine outreach educator, but not both within a single calendar year.

Outreach and subsidies are supported by the Portland House Foundation.
