Join us for an engaging conversation with award-winning photojournalist Andrew Quilty on his new book, This is Afghanistan.

Andrew was one of a small number of journalists who remained in Kabul to witness the withdrawal of international military forces from Afghanistan, the collapse of its government and the return to power of the Taliban. In the years leading up to this moment, he had travelled to all parts of the country documenting the war and its effects on the lives of Afghans. This is Afghanistan is a visual record of his nine years in this vibrant, complex and war-ravaged country.

This event will also feature unique perspectives from Zahra Karimi, who was born in Afghanistan and lived in Kabul for 20 years until she was evacuated in August 2021. Her activism journey began with peace work as part of the Afghan Youth Representative to the United Nations program. Soon after, Zahra was appointed as the Executive Director of ‘Her Afghanistan’, an international women’s organisation with a network of over 5000 Afghan women activists around the country.

ABC Radio National Big Ideas (opens in a new window)presenter Natasha Mitchell will host the conversation, which will also be recorded for a national broadcast.

Copies of This is Afghanistan will be available for purchase. Booking your spot is essential as places are limited.
