This service commemorates the last major battle fought by Australian and New Zealand troops during Operation Ivanhoe and the Battle of Nui Le, and the role played by B Coy 4 RAR/NZ.

On 21 September 1971, B Coy and D Coy fought the battle-hardened North Vietnamese 33rd Regiment through day and night.

A patrol from B Coy was ambushed and hit with a mortar barrage wounding 15 men, including the platoon commander and all the non-commissioned officers.
