Explore Stories, Objects and Uniforms from the Second World War.

As we mark 80 years since the end of the Second World War, join us behind the scenes at the Shrine. Kids can explore real artefacts and discover history through our hands-on school holiday activities.

Handling History

Grab a pair of white gloves and join us behind the scenes at the Shrine. In this guided session, kids will handle artefacts and uniforms from the Second World War. Explore ration cards, equipment and hear stories about life on the front line and at home in an immersive experience that brings history to life.

Perfect for kids aged 8–12.

Sessions will run on the following dates:

  • Mon 22 Sept - Thurs 25 September 2025,
  • Mon 29 September - Fri 3 October

There are two 45-minute sessions per day at 10:30am & 11:30am.

Booking information:

  • Sessions are free but bookings are essential.

  • Participants will meet in the Shrine Visitor Centre and be guided to our Second World War Room by Shrine Educators.

  • Children must be accompanied by an adult or guardian.

Young explorers can learn about the Australian Women’s Auxiliaries of the Second World War and the hats they wore. Start by colouring in this sheet, and then explore the Galleries of Remembrance to see the hats on display.
