The Shrine of Remembrance is pleased to announce the appointment of Major General (Retd) Andrew Bottrell AO, CSC & Bar, DSM as Chairperson of the Shrine of Remembrance Board of Trustees.

A highly respected military leader with more than 39 years of service in the Australian Defence Force, Major General Bottrell brings extensive leadership, governance and strategic experience to one of Australia's most significant places of remembrance.

Major General Bottrell will lead the Board as the Shrine continues its mission to honour the service and sacrifice of Australians in war, peacekeeping and peacemaking operations, while inspiring future generations to reflect on the values and freedoms defended through service.

Throughout a distinguished military career, Major General Bottrell held a number of senior leadership appointments across Defence. Most recently, he served as Head of Land Systems at Victoria Barracks from 2018 to 2023, where he was responsible for delivering complex capability programs and demonstrated exceptional strategic leadership and commitment to service.

His operational service included deployments to some of Australia's most challenging military environments, including Antarctica, East Timor, Iraq and Afghanistan. These experiences have given him a deep understanding of the service and sacrifice that the Shrine exists to commemorate.

Beyond his military career, Major General Bottrell has built an accomplished record across tertiary education, government and finance. He holds Master's degrees in Defence Studies, Arts and Business, is a graduate of the Harvard Business School Advanced Management Program, and is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
