Peter Meehan holds the Shrine Medal

The Shrine of Remembrance is pleased to announce that Squadron Leader Peter Meehan OAM (Retd) has been awarded the Shrine of Remembrance Medal for meritorious service to the Shrine.

Peter has provided the Shrine’s commemorative voice to Remembrance Day services for the last 29 years and performed this same function at Anzac Day services for the last 11 years.

These periods paralleled a resurgence in community participation in on-site commemoration at the Shrine of Remembrance which culminated in the Centenary of Anzac: inclusive of the 2015 Dawn Service which attracted 85,000 pilgrims—the greatest number of attendees to a Dawn Service in the modern era—and an average annual attendance exceeding 40,000.

The Shrine Medal is awarded to an individual in recognition of their outstanding contribution to the advancement of community knowledge and understanding of the service and sacrifice of Victorians in war and peacekeeping.

Dean Lee, Chief Executive Officer, Shrine of Remembrance said:

“Peter is a veteran and a highly regarded professional who has provided his MC services to the Shrine and RSL Victoria at no charge. He has done this with humility and unrivalled generosity of spirit—going above and beyond in magnanimous service to others.”
Peter, who is also a Shrine Governor, received the award at the Shrine of Remembrance on Wednesday 12 April 2023, with Shrine Trustees and family members in attendance.
