Join us for a special afternoon celebrating the extraordinary life and music of ‘Sep’ Kelly—composer, pianist and Olympic gold medallist, whose life was cut short on the battlefields of the Somme 110 years ago.
A gifted musician and decorated wartime officer, Kelly left behind a remarkable body of work and a story of extraordinary achievement, friendship and loss. This event brings his story and music back to the stage.
The afternoon begins with the launch of To Gallipoli and the Somme: F.S. Kelly; War hero, Olympic champion and Pianist Composer, the new biography by Dr Therese Radic and Martin Cross.
This will be followed by a screening of the award-winning documentary Elegy, which explores Kelly’s musical tribute to his friend and fellow officer, the British poet Rupert Brooke.
The event concludes with a special performance by acclaimed pianists Edward and Stephanie Neeman, featuring several of Kelly’s works, interwoven with readings from his wartime diary by Carrillo Gantner AC.
An afternoon of music, remembrance and a remarkable Australian story.
Presented in partnership with Flowers of Peace and the Australian War Memorial.
Books can be purchased with your ticket or on the day.
Attendees are also welcome to stay for the Shrine’s weekly Last Post Service on the forecourt following the event.
