The Reserve Forces were born out of the Citizen Military Forces, which has existed in some form since Federation. Today, they support peacekeeping, humanitarian and disaster-relief operations. Recently, Reserve units have deployed to Iraq, Afghanistan, East Timor and the Solomon Islands.

Reserve Forces Day takes place on the anniversary of the reforming of the Citizen Military Forces in 1948.
