This service honours those who served aboard HMA Ships Westralia, Kanimbla and Manoora. During the Second World War, these ships were turned into armed merchant cruisers and infantry landing ships. From late 1943 onwards, they took part in many landings throughout the South West Pacific.

The date of this service marks the anniversary of the first major operation by an Australian landing ship. On 15 December 1943, HMAS Westralia helped land troops at Arawe, New Britain, as part of the US 7th Fleet.
