Join us at week's close to honour those who have served and sacrificed so that we may enjoy our lives of relative peace, comfort and freedom.

Each Sunday we pause to remember a different event from Australia's military history. We remember the men and women who took part in those events, and the lives lost or forever changed.

Today we honour those killed in the attacks on Pearl Harbour on 7 December, 1941. The attack by the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service on the United States Naval Base in Hawaii was a surprise strike designed to prevent the United States from taking part in the Second World War.

The attacks damaged dozens of ships and hundreds of aircraft, and left 2,403 military personnel and civilians dead, including over 1,000 on the USS Arizona

Instead of stopping the US from entering the war, the surprise attack changed the attitude of Americans to the war and led to them siding with the Allies. The attack, and the consequent decision to enter the war, changed the course of the Second World War for Australia and the Allies.

Shrine Representative:

  • Shrine Governor Squadron Leader Matthew Little
