The 2/3rd Pioneer Battalion was raised in May 1940 at Glenfield NSW, and after a period of training arrived in Egypt in November 1940. In January 1942 the Battalion moved to Syria and became attached to the 9th Division, who they were with for the rest of the war. As fighting intensified around El Alamein (Egypt) in July 1942 the 9th Division was rushed from Syria to reinforce the line, where they played a prominent role in the heavy fighting until victory was achieved in November. Following this the 9th Division was recalled to Australia to face the Japanese threat, and the 2/3rd returned to Australia in early 1943 for a period of leave and jungle training before returning to action against the Japanese in New Guinea. The 2/3rd returned to Australia in January 1946 where they were disbanded shortly after.
