  • Discovering SS Iron Crown

    Tuesday 3 September, 12:00pm

    Hear from Emily Jateff who was Chief Scientist on board RV Investigator when it discovered the final resting place of SS Iron Crown. The vessel, sunk by a Japanese submarine off the Victorian coastline in June 1942, was discovered in 2019  in a collaboration between CSIRO and Heritage Victoria.

    The annual Merchant Navy service will follow at 2pm.

  • Lessons Learned?

    The successes or failures of prolonged military campaigns have often been decided by the health of the combat troops. On 20th February 1942, Colonels H Fairley and I Mackerras wrote 'when exposed to malaria in New Guinea over 50% of the Australian Force may be destroyed'. Malaria did devastate the force. The cause of this near-disaster and the superb research that eliminated the threat will be discussed by Professor Geoffrey Quail.

  • Remembrance Gardens Tour

    Before Remembrance Day, view the poppies in full bloom and the plantings on the southern side of the Shrine Gardens. Visit trees recognising the Royal Australian Navy and the plantings honouring Allied personnel lost in war and peacekeeping. Tour includes a Devonshire Tea.
